First of ‘big six’ retail energy suppliers confirms imminent price rise
NPower – one of the ‘big six’ energy providers for UK consumers – has confirmed an energy price rise set to come into effect in March 2017.
It means a typical dual-fuel bill will go up by a huge 9.8 per cent, or around £109.
When one firm announces price rises, the rest usually follow. While households are likely to be the hardest hit by the announcement, it is a strong indicator of the way the entire industry responds to market forces.
This means businesses are likely to be affected, too, unless they take action.
It has been estimated that the ‘big six’ make ‘excessive profits’ from SMEs, to the tune of around £280m per year.
